Women's Issues Regarding Mental Health

The lives of most people involve some joy and some pain. The latter has a tendency to affect mental health. Some tragedies including domestic violence, assault, or loss of a loved one can cause this pain. Fortunately, there are techniques and people to turn to in times of tragedy like this. Having someone to talk to who may change your perspective about the matter and thinking about the positive aspects can be of benefit, as well as talking over the best solutions to such problems. One factor which may also affect mental health for women is the change in physical health. The change in hormone levels due to the monthly cycle can affect mood and cause irritation and tearfulness.

In the developed world, women represent about 65 percent of patients in mental institutions. There are two common explanations of this situation. One is the social factors, women are more likely to be diagnosed to have a mental illness because of sex-role stereotyping, which presumes that women are prone to emotional stress because of social factors specific to their gender role. The other factor is that women can find themselves more anxious, depressed or fearful. Womens disadvantaged social status can sometimes generate a greater level of mental health problems.

Certain mental health disorders are more prevalent in women. Disorders includes: depression, anxiety and specific phobias, post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD), eating disorder, and Schizophrenia. Depression is thought to be the most common mental disorder. The number of women diagnosed to have it is roughly double that of men. It may not seem obvious to others if someone is experiencing it, but the illness is upsetting and unbearable. Feeling anxious about aspects in life may not be considered as a problem for most people. Just like depression, the number of women who are affected by PTSD is twice as much as men. Women account for at least 65 percent of binge-eating disorder cases. Some women do eat too much to cope with depression. Schizophrenia is an illness that can cause a person to have difficulty in deciding what is real and what is not.

Some research studies in issues related to women?s mental health include: the differences in brain development that provide insights into the treatment and prevention of depression; mood and memory processes in women that may make it harder for them to quit smoking; effects of estrogen on memory, behavior, cognition, and emotion, and particularly how estrogen seems to increase rates of PTSD and depression; genetics specific to women that may contribute to alcoholism. It is important that women recognize the need to have good mental health. No one is exempt in feeling anxious and worried from time to time. But it is easy to notice when a woman is experiencing so, because she may display a negative disposition that may influence her ability to function normally. We all know that most mental health disorders do not have an exact cause. It may result from a combination of life events, genes, brain chemicals, and hormones.

It is not our fault if we experiencing such issues. We should not keep ourselves from it because it will not help us if we do not face it, and often this can lead to the worst outcome. It is better if you reach out to others for help like a psychologist, psychiatrist or even your family. Always keep in mind that mental illness should not be taken lightly, thus, it should be treated immediately. If treatment is successful, you can enjoy your life again.

FEMA: Bells Makes Flood Insurance Available to its Residents and ...

City of Bells, Tenn. joins National Flood Insurance Program

Release Date: February 24, 2012
Release Number: R4-12-007

??2012?Region IV News Releases

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The city of Bells in Crockett County, Tenn. is now a participating community in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which means those living and working in Bells can purchase federally-underwritten flood insurance.

Flooding is the most common and costliest nature disaster in the U.S. Standard homeowner?s, business owner?s, and renter?s insurance doesn?t cover flood damage, so a separate flood insurance policy can provide property owners with financial protection against the devastating effects of flooding.

On February 1, Bells joined nearly 21,000 communities participating in the NFIP nationwide.? The NFIP does more than make flood insurance available; it also supports local communities in their efforts to reduce the risk and consequences of serious flooding. In order to participate in the program, a community must agree to adopt and enforce sound floodplain management regulations and ordinances to reduce future flood damage. In exchange for these practices, flood insurance is available to homeowners, business owners and renters in participating communities.

Even if you don?t live in an area at high-risk of flooding, you should still consider flood insurance because anyone can be financially vulnerable to floods. People outside of high-risk areas file more than 20 percent of NFIP claims and receive one-third of disaster assistance for flooding.

The NFIP is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency which works with nearly 90 private insurance companies to provide affordable flood insurance to property owners and renters in NFIP-participating communities.? Flood insurance policies may be written by state-licensed property and casualty insurance agents.

For more information on the National Flood Insurance Program, visit www.floodsmart.gov.?

FEMA?s mission is to support our citizens and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain, and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards.

Looking back on her time with Whitney, Jordin admitted to being a little emotional as Thursday rolled around.

"It definitely makes me very emotional," she told Access. "I looked up to her and I sang her songs and then all of a sudden I was in a movie with her and I got to see her face-to-face, and she was so kind and she was so sweet.

Women More Likely To Have Deadly 'Silent' Heart Attacks

The Telegraph:

They tend to have more deadly 'silent' heart attacks and consequently fail to call a doctor in time, according to US research.

Taking absolute numbers, men under 65 are almost three times more likely to have a heart attack than women of the same age.

But if the survival chances of individual male and female heart attack patients are examined, the picture is quite different.

Grow Your Rural Business Using the Internet | Erin Blaskie Blog | On ...

Grow Your Rural Business Using the Internet

Feb 22

In a recent blog post on the Business on Main website called, ?10 Ways to Take Advantage of a Rural Location?, members of the Young Entrepreneur Council (of which I am also a member!) offered up ways to boost business even if you?re in a rural location.

To add to that, I wanted to include 3 ways that you can grow your rural business using the Internet. ?These methods can be applied to any business but I?m slanting them toward those businesses who are located in a rural setting because it is often these businesses who don?t necessarily feel that the Internet will help them grow their business.

Grow Your Rural Business Using the Internet

It?s hard to tell why rural businesses resist creating an online presence to market themselves. Maybe it?s the established companies who feel their current marketing strategy works, so why fix it? Or perhaps it?s local shops that feel their only market is the people who live in their area, so what?s the point?

Here?s the point. People travel all over these days and before they leave home, what do they do? They research what places they?ll pass on the way. As for a working marketing strategy with no online presence ? in today?s age, if you?re not using the Internet to market your business, your strategy is most certainly broken.

Establishing an online presence is a lot easier than you might think. Here are a few suggestions to help you get started:

Social Media
If you?re like over 845 million of us, you already own a Facebook account, and you?ve probably clicked plenty of ?likes? for other companies. Now, why aren?t you using it to promote your own business? You can easily set up a fan page and invite your customers to join. You can then let them know about sales or products, or just get to know them better by connecting in a more personal way.

As the people in your local area like your posts and share them with others, your reach will grow exponentially to not only those inside your local market but to people outside of your local market as well. ?Wouldn?t it be great to be that place that people need?to go to when passing through your town?

Online Business Review Sites
Say you?re eating at a new restaurant tonight. Most likely, you?ll check their ratings before you go. It?s just what we do these days. People research furniture, health gurus, novelty shops, and ? that thing that you do. Which is why it?s a good idea to have a profile on the top review sites for your industry. Once you get it set up, be sure to ask your (satisfied) customers to submit reviews.

Business Website
I know this is obvious, but you totally have a business website, right? If you don?t, you don?t have to admit it, but you do have to get one immediately. Even if all you put up is a one-page blog listing your direct contact information on it, that will do until you can upgrade. But be sure to upgrade. ?(And if you need help with this, our virtual team can most definitely help!)

When your customers or potential clients search for your business online, they don?t want to find an entry on a telephone list, they want to see your space, your products and they want to see you. If you don?t have an online presence, you?re missing out on a lot of ? mostly free ? marketing that could increase your business a lot more than you think. If you wanted, you could even start right now. What have you got to lose?

Don?t forget to also continue reading about this topic over?on the Business on Main website in their article called, ?10 Ways to Take Advantage of a Rural Location.?

Harris new rugged tablet brings Honeycomb to your local combat-zone

Harris makes the tough tech you'd expect to see census takers (leave it), NFL stadiums and public buses toting around. It's introducing a new 7-inch Android tablet that's so hard-as-nails it would make a Galaxy Tab go home and call its mother. The Harris RF-3590 packs a 1024 x 600 multitouch display, a dual-core 1.5GHz CPU, 2GB of LPDDR2 RAM, 2 and 8-megapixel front and rear-facing cameras and comes running Honeycomb. There's plenty of connection options with the usual WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth supplanted by a cellular connection, Ethernet, HDMI, SD and USB holes. It'll come with a 64GB SSD as standard but you can upgrade it to 128GB if you've got the moolah. Designed for soldiers in the battlefield, when stealth isn't necessary you can even activate voice control and bark your orders into the pair of microphones included. There's no word on pricing or availability, presumably because if you want to pick one of these up, you probably need to be called "General," and not just because you're good at Starcraft.

[Thanks, Mike]

Europe seals $170 billion?Greece bailout

IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde, talking to Greece's Prime Minister Lucas Papademos on Monday, admitted after the Greek bailout deal was unveiled that "it's not an easy (program), it's an ambitious one."

By NBC News, msnbc.com and news services

Updated at?10 a.m. ET: BRUSSELS -- After months of tough negotiating, Europe and the International Monetary Fund sealed a deal early Tuesday to hand Greece ?130 billion ($170 billion) in additional bailout loans to save it from a default that threatened the viability of the euro, undermining global economic confidence.

The early-hours agreement to avert default comes after negotiators persuaded private bondholders to take greater losses and Athens to commit to very severe austerity measures.

Ministers finalized measures to cut Greece's debt to 120.5 percent of gross domestic product by 2020, a fraction above the target, to secure its second rescue in less than two years and meet a bond repayment next month.

The eurozone and the IMF, which will be providing the money for the new bailout, hope the new program will eventually put Greece back into a position where it can survive without external support and secure its place in the euro currency union. Finance ministers from Greece and the other 16 euro countries meeting in Brussels wrangled until the early morning hours over how that could be achieved.

What does the Greece bond swap bailout deal mean?

On top of the new rescue loans, Athens will also ask banks and other investment funds to forgive it some ?107 billion in debt, while the European Central Bank and other national central banks in the eurozone will forgo profits on their holdings.

The accord, which had been months in the making, seeks to reduce Greece's massive debts on all fronts, with both private and official creditors going beyond what they had said was possible in the past.

But the costs for Greece, in potential loss of autonomy and further strict austerity measures, were implicit from a statement from Eurogroup, which Europe's finance ministers belong to.

A Greek economist talks about a bailout's potential pitfalls before the final agreement is unveiled. NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

"The Eurogroup is fully aware of the significant efforts already made by the Greek citizens but also underlines that further major efforts by the Greek society are needed to return the economy to a sustainable growth path," the statement read. "We reiterate our commitment to provide adequate support to Greece during the life of the programme and beyond until it has regained market access, provided that Greece fully complies with the requirements and objectives of the adjustment programme."

So it was clear that Greece, which kicked off Europe's debt crisis two years ago, was at the very best starting a long and painful road to recovery. At the worst, the new program would push the country even deeper into recession and see it default on its debts further down the line.

"It's not an easy (program), it's an ambitious one," said Christine Lagarde, the head of the IMF, adding that there were significant risks that Greece's economy could not grow as much as its international creditors were hoping.

The austerity measures wrought from Greece are also widely unpopular among the population and may hold difficulties for a country which is due to hold an election in April. Further protests could test politicians' commitment to cuts to wages, pensions and jobs.

So social upheaval was a real risk, Paschos Mandravelis, a political analyst at Greece's Kathimerini newspaper, told NBC News' Andy Eckardt.

"If people in the broad middle class landscape get desperate and feel choked, there is the possibility of some kind of uprising," he said.

"We don't have money...Now our only target is to have food to survive," Greek shopkeeper Michael Ipermahos says about the gravity of the financial crisis. "My advice to my children is to leave Greece, throw away their Greek passports and be a citizen of another country."

A Greek's only hot seller: Tear gas masks

And some economists say there are still questions over whether Greece can pay off even a reduced debt burden.

A return to economic growth could take as much as a decade, a prospect that brought thousands of Greeks onto the streets to protest against austerity measures Sunday. The cuts will deepen its five-year recession, hurting government revenues.

Europe's economy edges closer to recession

A report prepared by experts from the European Union, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund said Greece would need extra relief to cut its debts near to the official debt target given the worsening state of its economy.

If Athens did not follow through on economic reforms and savings to make its economy more competitive, its debt could hit 160 percent by 2020, said the report, obtained by Reuters.

"Given the risks, the Greek program may thus remain accident-prone, with questions about sustainability hanging over it," the nine-page confidential report said.

Camella Homes

Since its inception in the 70?s under C&P Homes, Camella has expanded to 28 different provinces nationwide. It continues to be a beacon of hope for Filipinos?helping them fulfill their dreams of owning a home.

More than constructing houses, the company creates the spaces where lives are lived. Where individuals shape their aspirations and families shape their futures. Camella?s firm belief is that it builds not just a house but a home?and as such, the creation of a perfect environment for families is top priority.

Camella has always been committed to touching Filipino lives and helping achieve their dreams. Recently, Camella homebuyers shared their stories of how fulfilled they are in living out their dream in their dream home. Theirs are just some of the many heartwarming and inspiring experiences of more than 250,000 Camella homebuyers across the country.

Anchoring at Cerritos?Jesus Emmanuel Guilas, master mariner

Ten years of circling the globe as a tanker captain, Jesus Emmanuel Guilas set his anchor down at Camella?s Cerritos development in Daang Hari, Alabang, in April 2008, to locate his family permanently here and to prepare for the future of his children.

Jesus and wife Ivymarie made sure their hard-earned money was spent well on a home that had a good and secure environment for their young children, seven-year-old twin boys Andrew Per and Per Mattheiu.

It took the couple only one month to decide on making the purchase at Cerritos; though, Ivymarie relates, it took them six years to prepare for it.

?Cerritos has a quiet neighborhood,? Ivymarie says, adding it is near all the conveniences of the city, yet far enough to be peaceful.

?Tahimik at ligtas ang lugar namin [Our place is peaceful and safe],? she relates. ?Simple lang pero elegante ang mga bahay dito (The houses here are simple yet elegant),? Ivymarie adds.

Ivymarie considers Camella a big help to overseas Filipinos who take extra care in spending their hard-earned money. ?Kaya malaking bagay na mayroong magandang lugar tulad ng Cerritos na hindi mo panghihinayangang paglaanan ng pera [Good thing there is Cerritos, which is a wise investment],? she says. Three of her friends have also bought homes in Camella upon her recommendation.

According to Ivymarie, Vista Land gives immense support to overseas Filipinos through a very helpful sales team. ?Madali silang lapitan at hingian ng tulong [They are friendly and approachable],? she says.

The Guilases? have purchased three units from Camella Cerritos Phase 2?one unit for the family and one each for their twins. They believe it is never too early to prepare for the future.

Skipping Non-essentials?Nenita Jorquin, nursing aide-Camella Cebu

She would skip her daily cup of imported brew to save up and live out her dream?to buy her very own house. Five homes in Cebu built by Camella were Nenita?s reward for working hard in a foreign land, initially as a nanny in Singapore for a year in 1993; then as hotel employee in Hong Kong for three years; and lastly as a nursing aide in the US in 2000.

She bought her first home from Camella in Talisay in 1993, when she could only afford to buy a small unit with her Nanny?s wages. ?Tingin ko?y maluwang ang bahay, at maganda pa ang presyo [The unit looked spacious and it was affordable],? Nenita explained that the monthly payments were affordable, which was a big help to an OFW like her. ?Hindi mayabang ang dating pero lahat ng kailangan mo nandiyan lang [Our place is modest, yet everything you need is within reach],? she said. ?Nagtiwala silang makakabayad ako [They trusted that I could make the monthly payments],? she said.

A home under the sun?Sayreville ?Bing? Orcullo Harris-Solariega, Davao City

Like many other brave Filipinos, Sayreville ?Bing? Orcullo Harris, a single mother, tried her luck as an OFW based in Qatar and Saudi Arabia. She worked as a private nanny for seven years in the 1990s to support her family and her then young children, Marc Anthony and Kathleen. But fate had been kind to the young and adventurous Negrense. She met Australian Peter Harris, who was an engineer and oil company executive in Qatar. He was smitten by her charm. Bing saw and admired in Peter the same qualities she had: sincerity, courage and persistence. Now as Mrs. Bing Harris, she exudes the warmth of a woman fulfilled. She is presently a businesswoman, managing a travel agency and a small-scale gold mining business. Peter, is an Engineering Consultant for Petronas-Malaysia. He stays in their Solariega abode during his yearly vacation. Bing, who was born in Dumaguete City in extremely humble conditions and dared to brave foreign shores to find her place under the sun, found her sweet home. ?I immediately fell in love with the place,? she said.

Solariega?coined from the word ?Sola??is a sun-blessed Mediterranean-inspired community of postcard pretty houses, quaint terracotta colored walls, stucco tile roofs, with picture windows and balconies around landscaped gardens.

Bing wanted to move from Cotabato and ?walked into? Solariega. She saw the peace and beauty of the community, ?I suddenly felt at home,? she exclaimed. She immediately felt that Solariega was the right place for her family, which now includes their son Joshua. ?With the love and memories we have built in our home, I will stay in Solariega forever,? Bing said.

One of the first Camella homeowners?Ernie and Belen Celestino

The Celestinos looked back to their early married life and recounted their first step toward their future. In the ?70s, Ernie and Belen Celestino worked at San Miguel Corp. (SMC) where Belen was part of the accounting department and Ernie was a salesman. As employees, they had the opportunity to avail themselves of several benefits not only for themselves but also for their family.

Belen narrated that they first wanted to purchase a lot, as they felt that they did not have the time to get into the details of building a house. It was in 1978 when they began to look for one. The couple went to various cities in the Metro but it was at Camella in Las Pi?as where they felt at home. Apart from having a peaceful environment, it was the hassle-free relationship that they experienced that made them decide on Camella. Thing even went more smoothly as the couple hired Camella to construct their house. Their home was finished in 1980 and they immediately moved-in. Camella provided additional help in refining and maintaining the Celestino home in the first few years of their stay.

Today, the same house has become witness to the various changes in the Celestinos? family life. Camille, their eldest child, is a doctor and is currently a radiologist at the National Kidney Institute. Ernesto, their second child, is a banking professional. The youngest son, Francis, is studying a multimedia course at the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde. Exclusive: How California's ObamaRail Will Destroy One Family's ...

Through facebook I have been sent some information that details just how damaging the ObamaRail will be to one particular family in Hanford, California. Here is what was sent to me:

Since the state and feds under the directions of the governor and president are pushing the high speed rail committee to proceed at all costs regardless of the lawsuits as this project will go forward ? and Fresno is wanting the bag-of-wind promise of jobs regardless of the number to be lost and revenue with it from destroying businesses, homes and property. So Kings County will be forced to sell property and the land acquisition is going on as I speak. We are in line with the high speed rail for which they are only paying for the actual land that they use and it is pennies on the dollar with the arrogant statement that we can to donate to the project. No one knows the exact footage as the determining committee has not released it projected latest plan yet but will shortly and there is 45 days to contest it. The land owners in our beautiful area are angry ? and most don?t even know their land is involved. They have changed their tactics from we were very nice in the beginning to ?we want to help you understand this project? ? They could not be trusted the first time and definitely not the 2nd time. So next Sabbath there is a workshop by a secured by the committee fighting in Kings County an attorney and land appraiser to tell what to do to prepare for the one time only opportunity to deal with these not so nice folks. Power is dangerous as they being to act in dangerous ways to control as they think they are God?s to whom no one can hold them accountable and force control with severe results for not complying. God?s true character is one of choice ? no of fear and timidity but of sound mind and courage with purpose. So we will need to secure the services of a land appraiser and that of an attorney for which we shake at the where to pay for the expense. But ? we must prepare as we are hit at this projected plan on 2 fronts ? the rail right beside the house or into it or the neighbors and the front and only entrance into the property and our well for the over pass. I choose to stay focused on our Heavenly Father for he has promised to never leave us nor forsake us. The remainder of the land will not be accessible at there is a First Baptist church on one side and orchards on the other sides. Where will we go as the land will not be saleable and the cost of a new well is prohibitive. This is all planned by the Governor/President in the socialism plan to idle 1.3 million acres of Calif. Central Valley from water and move everyone into little city clusters of compact houses of tiny lots and to drive the last week mandated Calif. EPA electric cars that we are force to pay with the gas increase and move only by rail to cut the global warming. The devil is working over time in the short remaining time he has to destroy a many people and woo them to his cause that God is not fair. This is all part of the grand scheme and I choice to trust my Heavenly Father for He knows best and provides the strength and wisdom. Kings County will be destroyed. But the Governor and many other like the environmentalists do not like our area as we did not vote for him and continue to work against his schemes and unions and for the most part are conservative and depend on God while acting with integrity and accountability. With in the last year after seeing ?Forks Over Knives? and Dr. Barnard?s DVD ?Kick Start to Health?, we have gone vegan after ( deleted), was prescribed a statin for (deleted) climbing cholesterol. (deleted), was so upset that (deleted) decided the big block of cheese from Costco had to go along with the other animal products. Results: (deleted) cholesterol dropped from 225 to 172 in just 3 1/2 months. (deleted) has the experience of having severely effected members with milk intolerance from birth. But (deleted) was blistfully ignorant that (deleted) also had the problem until (deleted) stopped all dairy products and the headaches went away along with the arthritic pains. However, I will fight to the end for the dairy farmers in our area to be able to have the freedom to have their acreages, dairies and feed lots in the land of freedom while others are seeking to destroy the acreages, animals and equipment as the methane gas of cows is the worst pollutant so named by those ?ignorant professors and intellectuals of high learning institutions? of this state who have bought the notion that man is the cause of everything evil and global warming. If only they knew that God made all the animals and told man to care for them as man is trusted as the manager of all the provisions from God and that we just ask us to be wise with common sense ? something that is lacking in today?s world where selfishness is the religion that leads to ignorant laws of the land in an attempt to control with unconditional measures.

The daffodils are in full bloom in the back yard and the ones in front are starting to open on the schedule that only God understands the working of such and the birds are singing outside as they fed in the orchard and from the feeders (deleted), hangs in the trees ? trees that are on schedule to their reproductive nature instilled by the Creator. The stars are held in their orbits at night as is the moon and the sun and since today is the Sabbath I shall rest in the care of our Heavenly Father and rejoice that He and He alone is One to be trusted no matter what transpires. Oh yes, there are tears of frustration and concerns ? when will this all come about as it is projected to start within a couple ? 6 weeks? Where will we go as once the papers are signed as we only have 90 days to move or will this drag on with the committee and an attorney and expenses that I don?t know how to pay for? What do we do now that our investment is destroyed by the planned economic status by both the state and federal governments for the good of the people? So I turn to Ps. 147:3 ?He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds?, Deut. 31:6 6 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.? And Isaiah 41:10 ?10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.? Yes, there are many others. I choose to focus on the beauty of God?s character that I so long for and pray for abundant trust, faith, wisdom, health, strength and an abundant attitude of gratitude while relying on His promises and memorizing scripture to meditate on. The devil has so many schemes of untruth that he has blinded people with that I must rely on God and encourage others as we walk this valley of uncertainty and unfairness.

If the program after the land grab does not go forward, then they have accomplished the idling of acreage as planned that will be gang susceptible. But I choose to think there is still hope in stopping this project or rerouting it.

Our fore fathers chose ?In God We Trust? and as a citizen blessed with the privileges that resulted, the same must be the motive of each day.

May God lead each of us as we proceed with deep thanksgiving daily for bounty of His known and unknown blessings.

Cobook, A Slick Address Book App That Doesn?t Upload Your Data

cobook-01The mundane Address Book was big news this week due to the privacy fiasco, but here's a post about an impressive address book app with a different approach to privacy. Cobook is a Mac contact management app that's simple, powerful and actually fun to use. The software, made by a boot-strapped startup, is now in a free beta test, with 60,000 downloads since it launched at the end of January. Cobook is what the Mac OSX Address Book should be. It sits in the menu bar or can be undocked and instantly synchronizes with Apple's Address Book. Any data entered into Cobook gets synced to your other computers and devices. Because it?s a native app, adding contacts, assigning tags, and editing contact info is very quick. Your Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn contact info can also be pulled in, and if you hover over it, a pop-up window displays your contacts' Facebook info, Tweets, or LinkedIn profile.

Plant and computer scientists can now study the underground world of plants with more accuracy and clarity. The revolutionary technique will improve our chances of breeding better crop varieties and increasing yields.

Developed at The University of Nottingham by a team of experts from the Schools of Biosciences and Computer Science, the new approach is based on the same X-ray technology used in hospital CT scans and incorporates new image analysis software which, for the first time, can automatically distinguish plant roots from the other materials found in soil.

The results of this research, which has already been demonstrated on the roots of maize, wheat and tomato, have been published in the international scientific journal Plant Physiology.

The interdisciplinary team of scientists from the Centre for Plant Integrative Biology (CPIB) used X-ray Micro Computed Tomography (Micro-CT) to look at the shape and branching pattern the architecture of roots in soil. The data was then fed into the new RooTrak software which overcomes the problem of distinguishing between roots and other elements of the soil.

Breakthrough for food security

Dr Sacha Mooney, an expert in soil physics in the School of Biosciences, said: "This technique is a hugely important advance. The application of X-ray CT for visualising roots has been limited because we simply couldn't see a large portion of the root structure. RooTrak has enabled us to overcome this and has opened up the use of the technology for exploring the key questions regarding how we can manipulate plants and soils for improving our food security."

The RooTrak software works by taking a stack of virtual slices through the root-bearing soil. It treats each slice as a frame in a movie, so that static roots in each slice are treated as moving objects which can be tracked. This allows the software to differentiate between root and water or organic elements in the soil much more effectively than previous techniques. The detailed accurate root architecture can then be seen in three dimensions.

Tony Pridmore, Data Director at CPIB and an expert in tracking and analysis software, said: "Thinking of Micro-CT data as a sequence of images allows us to solve the problems caused by variations in the appearance of plant roots and the similarity of some roots to the surrounding soil. This is important because we can now extract descriptions of root architecture quickly and objectively."

Malcolm Bennett, Professor of Plant Sciences and an expert in root biology, said: "Root architecture critically influences nutrient and water uptake. A key impediment to genetic analysis of root architecture in crops grown in soil has been the ability to image live roots. Recent advances in microscale X-ray Computed Tomography (MicroCT) and RooTrak software at Nottingham now make this possible."

Ambitious project wins a further 3m in funding

The team has just been awarded a 3.5m (nearly 3m) five year European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Investigator Grant to use this new software in conjunction with an innovative microCT-based imaging approach to image wheat roots and select for new varieties with improved water and nutrient uptake efficiencies.

This ambitious project will be undertaken by a multidisciplinary team of scientists in the Centre for Plant Integrative Biology (CPIB) led by Professor Bennett. To undertake this research project help from collaborators across Europe, Mexico and Australia is also required to ensure that the most advanced techniques and biological resources are exploited to radically impact efforts to improve crop performance.

The CPIB is funded by the Systems Biology joint initiative of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The research was led by PhD student Stefan Mairhofer, with funding from The University of Nottingham's Interdisciplinary Doctoral Training Centre in Integrative Biology.

To understand chromosome reshuffling, look to the genome's 3D structure

ScienceDaily (Feb. 16, 2012) ? That our chromosomes can break and reshuffle pieces of themselves is nothing new; scientists have recognized this for decades, especially in cancer cells. The rules for where chromosomes are likely to break and how the broken pieces come together are only just now starting to come into view. Researchers at Children's Hospital Boston and the Immune Disease Institute (IDI)have helped bring those rules into clearer focus by discovering that where each of the genome's thousands of genes lie within the cell's nucleus -- essentially, the genome's three-dimensional organization -- holds great influence over where broken chromosome ends rejoin, knowledge that could shed light on fundamental processes related to cancer andnormal cellular functions, for example in immunity.

The study team, led by Frederick Alt, PhD, director of the Program in Cellular and Molecular Medicine at Children's Hospital Boston and the IDI; and Job Dekker, PhD, co-director of the Program in Systems Biology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, reported their results online on February 16 in the journal Cell.

In cancer cells, the process of chromosome rearrangement, or translocation -- marked by stretches of DNA physically breaking and swapping -- often results in the creation of new cancer-promoting "fusion" genes. Similarly, when a na?ve B cell starts to produce antibodies for the first time, it establishes its choice of target by breaking and recombining genes for antibody diversity.

"While chromosomal breaks and translocations are fundamental to many cancers, historically we've had no approaches to systematically study how they are generated," said Alt, who is also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator and the Charles A. Janeway Professor of Pediatrics and Professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School. "About five years ago, our group set out to generate a high-throughput approach to address this important problem in cancer biology."

To accomplish this goal, the Alt lab developed high-throughput genome-wide translocation sequencing(HTGTS, which maps "hot spots" in the genome where chromosome breaks and translocations are more likely to occur) and at a level of resolution not previously thought possible. In early HTGTS studies, they found that broken chromosomes often rearrange within themselves, as opposed to sharing pieces across different chromosomes.

To probe these findings more deeply, his laboratory joined forces with Dekker's to combine HTGTS with a method called Hi-C. Developed by Dekker's group, Hi-C measures how all the sequences in the genome are organized relative to one another in three dimensions.

The combined data revealed several related but distinct principles of how genomic organization governs chromosome rearrangements. The first is based on the slight differences in how each cell organizes its genome compared to its neighbors (referred to as cellular spatial heterogeneity of genome organization). While the genome is organized in an average fashion that is largely common across all cells of a population, each individual cell harbors small deviations from that average. This latter property allows many genes to be physically close to each other in just a small subset of cells, even if they are not close to each other in the majority of cells.

The second principle involves proximity. If two broken chromosome strands lie in close proximity within the three-dimensional space of a given cell's nucleus, they are more likely to connect. This finding is of particular importance for translocations involving DNA sequences that do not break frequently, such those involved in translocations found in various non-lymphoid tumors.

The third principle applies the first two to DNA sequences that do breakfrequently (such as those that drive antibody gene rearrangements during B cell development). Such sequences tend to reshuffle with the same partner sequences in those subsets of cells where the partners lie physically close together, even if the partners do not within most cells. This can fuel recurrent translocations like those seen in many lymphoid tumors.

Together, the principles highlight the relationship between proximity, genomic organization, and break frequency. "Two sequences have to be broken and physically proximal to join," Alt explains. "Iftwo sequences are together in most cells and frequently broken, they will translocate in many cells. If they are frequently together but one of them doesn't break, or if they both break frequently but always lie on opposite sides of the nucleus, the chances that they will translocate are very low or zero. However, if both sequences break very frequently and are close together in a subset of cells, they will very frequently translocate in that subset, contributing to recurrent translocations."

"Our finding that broken chromosome segments are more likely to join with other segments within the same chromosome, rather than other, more physically distant segments from other chromosomes, likely has great relevance to cancer genomes," Alt continued. "For example, cancer treatments that cause breaks may preferentially lead to intra-chromosomal rearrangements. It may also have relevance for 'chromothripsis,' a recently discovered phenomenon in many cancers in which the sequences of one chromosome become scrambled."

The new understanding of the roles of physical spatial proximity and overall three-dimensional genome structure in chromosomal translocations opens up new avenues for deciphering how the way a cell's nucleus is organized affects the genomic disarray found in cancer and other diseases characterized by chromosome reshuffling. The study also shows the power of combining two high-throughput genomic assays -- Hi-C and HGTGS -- for studying how the organizational plan within the nucleus influences fundamental biological processes.

"We feel that our findings and the application of our approaches will provide a new lens through which to view the genomes of many different types of cancer," Alt concluded.

This study was supported by the National Cancer Institute, the National Human Genome Research Institute, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the W.M. Keck Foundation, the Cancer Research Institute, and the German National Merit Foundation.

mOOresville fOOdie: Cosmos on Rea Rd sets the standard

We have had multiple trips to the Cosmos in uptown that were always a joy.? With the extensive time we spend in the Ballantyne/Blakeney areas, it was about time to try this newer location.? It's snuggled in a small plaza with Cafe Really (see recent post) and a deli/meat market.? Parking is not a great issue, since it's the only real draw at night.
One thing I strongly recommend with any restaurant that has a bar - SIT AT THE BAR!? The bartenders are more personable, have much more time in close proximity to care for your needs, and in many cases have the most experience as servers.

This visit rung true to that.? We had a great server (bartender) and his knowledge of the sushi menu made a couple of great recommendations.? Caleigh's Comet roll was advised and boy did it deliver.? It has a nice heat for someone that wants a little bite.? It would be too much for the timid.? I was thrilled with the taste and heat.

Their entree salads are very large and a little quirky.? From Caesar, to garden, then off to Strawberry Fields (forever).? Sorry, had to drop a Beatles reference.? Before my time - but I did see the Bee Gees movie "Sargeant Pepper's".? There is a Greek and a Flank steak.? Here is the kicker.? The flank steak comes with fries on the salad.? Okay, not the healthiest option, but if you ever feel like salad leaves you a little hungry, this one does not.

There are plenty of specials, both food and drink.? Check their website and make a stop.? This is a recommend for sure.

P.S. - They do brunch :)

For some people, recognizing the symptoms of anxiety or depressed feelings can be difficult. Others may choose to ignore the problems until they get out of hand. Dealing with these emotional problems is the first step to getting through them successfully.

Anxiety and Depression

Medical doctors identify anxiety and depression as the standard response as well as fear to be able to nerve-racking scenarios. Generally, this particular feeling disappears once the tension handles. When it occurs each day, or even without evident cause, the particular feelings can be dangerous on the person keeping the anxious thoughts.

According to the National Institute for Mental Health, over 40 million people in the United States experience anxiety and depression disorders. These disorders range in complexity and typically affect adults over the age of 18. However, children may be affected as well. The majority of disorders can last six months or more. The time may depend on the type of condition experienced and the mental state of the person.

A number of anxiety and depression types exist, including panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. People who experience some type of post-traumatic stress, phobia and obsessive-compulsive condition also may have long-term fears.

Your anxiety and depression signs contain perspiring, being easily annoyed, discomfort and trepidation. People may go through some as well as most signs in the course of symptoms. Managing the signs will not be productive until medical doctors very first deal with the source. Learning exactly why sufferers have ailments can often mean the main difference involving residing effectively and also satisfied existence or even staying in continual declares associated with fear.

Treatments for these types of anxiety and depression conditions may be controlled with medication, yoga and other methods to calm stress. Physicians may prescribe therapy to help their patients deal with their condition.

Depression

Frustrated feelings might accompany stress and anxiety but could occur alone in some cases. This feeling associated with hopelessness, sadness and also loss has an effect on lots of people. Those with anxiety and depression conditions may go through just like the world will be falling lower around these people. They tend in order to really feel unhappy regarding days as well as months at the same time. Typically, people grow to be depressed for any short time. The feeling can depart just as quickly mainly because it arrives. However, if people miss perform, steer clear of other folks or even possess views involving destruction, it will become a problem.

Your the signs of depressive feelings may strike following a life-changing incident, emotional injury or some other major stress. Medical doctors may well send patients who exhibit indications of major depression to experts who package straight using despondent issues.

The types of disorders include major, minor and bipolar. Women who give birth may experience postpartum depression. This type can be dangerous to mothers and their children depending on the severity of symptoms. Seeking help may be the only way to treat depressive moods. Medications and counseling may be used as treatment methods for anxiety and depression. Doctors may prescribe treatment based on the exhibited symptoms and their severity.

Feelings Issues
