Next, slice green and yellow zucchini and carrots. Cut babycorns into halves (lengthwise) and cut broccoli into florets. For mashed potatoes, peel and slice the potato and cook in a pan by adding some water, simmer till the potato completely absorbs the water. To finish, add butter, cream, salt and pepper. Remove the marinated steak and barbecue it till well cooked. In a plate, place mashed potato and vegetables tossed in herbs, butter and garlic. Place the steak on mashed potatoes and pour the sauce over it. Garnish it with caramelised onions, parmesan flakes, chopped parsley and a sprig.

Secrets to a successful barbeque party

> Before using the barbeque, carefully read the instructions, paying attention to warning labels and safety information.
> If you do not have a big grill, try working with three or four smaller sized barbecue grills and designate each one for a different food item ? one each for meat, vegetarian dishes, fish etc.
> Good organisation is the key. Keep all the necessary ingredients, seasonings and tools prepared, including the rack and foil for resting.
> Place the barbeque on a level surface and make sure it is well ventilated. Use long handled tools and wear oven gloves.
> Never leave a barbecue unattended.
> Time and technique of cooking will vary depending on the weather. Food cooks quicker when it is hot, but takes longer if it is cold or windy.
> Cover the barbecue with a lid during the cooking process, especially for the larger cuts. This will cook larger cuts evenly and will lock in the flavours.
> For hygiene reasons never mix raw and cooked meat. Keep raw meat cool indoors until just before cooking. Wash your hands before cooking and after handling raw meat.
> If you are planning to host a party, store enough fuel for the evening. Also invest in a cool box to store uncooked food.
> Barbecue food makes lavish use of herbs, oil and lemon juice in the marinades. Hence pairing grilled food with the right drinks will enhance the whole barbecue experience. Robust wines full of flavour are a great match!

Dishes recommeded for a barbeque party at home:

> Seafood like marinated prawns, lobsters, fish of choice and availability (personal choices ? salmon, sea bass, trout or Indian halibut)
> Whole stuffed roasted chicken, chicken wings with a barbeque marinade
> Root veggies like tapioca, yam, sweet potatoes (can be served with any other dish or by itself)
> Steaks (tenderloin preferred as it is easier to cook) with choice of sauces, spare ribs, pork or lamb chops
> Cold meat like German sausages, salami, hot dogs and ham burgers are always a hot favourite
> Cheese sauce, barbeque sauce, spicy devilled tomato or any fresh fruit juice base are good accompanying sauces
> Corn on the cob
> Marinated vegetables

Americans? support for Israel grows in wake of Arab Spring, poll reveals

The convulsions of the Arab Spring may be driving the American public?s support for Israel to new highs, according to a poll released Wednesday by the Washington-based group The Israel Project.

Americans who say the United States should support the Jewish state in the conflict with the Palestinians increased from 60 percent a year ago to 68% today, a survey of voters taken November 6-8 by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner has found.

[...]

That analysis is supported by the finding that 81% of Americans want to maintain or bolster US relations with Israel, while only 13% want the US to distance itself from Israel. (A consistent 2% want the US to ?end its relationship with Israel.?)

That?s a significant bump in support for the relationship from one year earlier, when support for maintaining or strengthening the relationship was at 73%, and for distancing at 23%.

China's November official PMI seen hitting seven-month high as demand revives

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's factory activity in November probably expanded at its fastest pace in seven months, reinforcing views that recovery in the world's second-largest economy is entrenched going into the final quarter of the year.

China's official purchasing managers' index (PMI) in November may have rebounded to 50.6 from October's 50.2, the median estimate of 11 economists polled by Reuters showed, the latest evidence a recovery in the vast manufacturing sector was gathering momentum on the back of a revival in domestic demand.

The 50-point line demarcates accelerating from slowing activity in PMI survey methodology.

"More signs are emerging that the economy is gaining strength and the recovery is durable. Therefore, the market has shown it has high expectations for November economic data," said Nie Wen, an analyst at Hwabao Trust in Shanghai.

"The strong readings of power output and cargo freight in recent weeks also cement this trend," he added.

China's economy has shown positive changes since September, with an array of economic indicators from factory output to retail sales and investment pointing to an uptick in the broader economy, as Beijing's pro-growth policies start to bite.

Analysts said the end of a destocking cycle and a quickening pace of investment would keep driving up domestic demand and extend the recovery trend into the final quarter of this year.

China's annual economic growth dipped to 7.4 percent in the third quarter, slowing for seven quarters in a row and leaving the economy on course for its weakest showing since 1999.

Given recent signs of recovery, many analysts expect the economy to snap out of its longest downward cycle since the global financial crisis and start to trend up in the fourth quarter.

A flash PMI published last week by HSBC showed China's factory sector saw its expansion accelerate in November for the first time in 13 months, signaling that the pace of economic growth has revived.

But economists also warned of downside risks from still cloudy external markets, considering the nagging European debt crisis and listless U.S. economy continued to crimp demand from China's two largest trade partners.

The central bank has moved cautiously in easing monetary policy to underpin economic growth, wary of reigniting inflation and fanning property prices which are still high.

It cut interest rates twice in June and July and lowered banks' reserve requirement ratio by 150 basis points in three steps since last November, but has refrained from further cuts since July. The authorities opted to inject liquidity via open market operations to pump short-term cash into money markets.

The official PMI generally paints a rosier picture of the factory sector than the HSBC PMI as the official survey focuses on big, state-owned firms, while the HSBC PMI targets smaller, private firms. There are also differing approaches to seasonal adjustment between the two surveys.

The official PMI survey will be released on Saturday at 0100 GMT (8 p.m. ET on Friday), ahead of the final HSBC PMI reading due at 0145 GMT.

WHWS 105.7FM Geneva: Hobart Football Off To Minnesota!

?The Hobart football team boarded buses this morning and left for the airport to fly to Minnesota for Saturday's NCAA quarterfinal playoff game.

The Geneva Police Department escorted the team buses from the Caird Center for Sports an Recreation.

The seventh-ranked Hobart College football team will face No. 4 St. Thomas University in the NCAA Division III Football Championship quarterfinals on Saturday, Dec. 1. Kickoff at O'Shaughnessy Stadium is scheduled for noon Central Time (1 p.m. Eastern).

Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for students. Ticket sales begin at 10:30 a.m. on game day and gates open at 11 a.m.

Making its seventh NCAA tournament appearance, Hobart reached the quarterfinals for the first time in program history thanks to a 35-10 victory over No. 24 Wittenberg on Saturday. The Statesmen ran for 286 yards and five touchdowns against the Tigers and held on to the football for 39:02.

Hobart is 12-0, a school record for wins in a season, and earned its spot in the 32-team field by winning the Liberty League championship and its automatic bid. The Statesmen are ranked in the top 25 in the nation in total defense (3rd, 222.58 yds/g), sacks allowed (4th, 0.5/g), pass defense (5th, 134.5 yds/g), rushing defense (15th, 88.08 yds/g), scoring defense (17th, 14.83 ppg), scoring offense (18th, 38.5 ppg), pass efficiency defense (19th, 101.9), and rushing offense (23rd, 245.25 yds/g).

Junior tailback Steven Webb was named the Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week after rushing for 130 yards and a touchdown against Wittenberg 35-10. It was his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the year and seventh of his career. For the season, Webb has rushed for 1,094 yards, making him the first Statesman to reach 1,000 yards since All-American Doug Blakowski in 2006.

Sophomore defensive end Tyre Coleman was tabbed the Liberty League Defensive Performer of the Week, recording seven tackles (5 solo), four tackles for a loss, and two sacks against the Tigers. His second sack of the day resulted in a fumble that the Statesmen recovered. Two plays later, Hobart scored a touchdown to go up 21-10 late in the third quarter. Coleman now has 7.5 tackles for a loss more than any other Statesman in a single season (29.5) and 2.5 more sacks (16.5). Junior linebacker Cory Davis is the Liberty League Special Teams Performer of the Week. He blocked a punt in the first quarter and recovered a muffed punt in the third quarter.

The Liberty League Rookie of the Week is first-year kicker James Hull. He made all five of his PAT attempts against Wittenberg. For the second straight week, he matched the Hobart postseason game record for PATs made. Hull also eclipsed the Statesmen postseason record for PATs made, raising his total to 10, three more than Eric Ampuja's 2004 mark.

The Tommies are also 12-0 following Saturday's 24-17 win over No. 17 Elmhurst. St. Thomas won the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to also earn an automatic bid. STU is ranked in the top 25 in the nation in rushing defense (7th, 75.92 yds/g), net punting (8th, 36.03 net yds/p), total defense (15th, 275.92 yds/g), scoring defense (16th, 14.75 ppg), total offense (18th, 474.92 yds/g), sacks (18th, 3.17), sacks allowed (19th, 0.83/g), rushing offense (20th, 249.25 yds/g), and pass efficiency defense (24th, 102.79).

Hobart and St. Thomas have never met on the gridiron and don't share any common opponents this season. To find common ground between the Tommies and the Statesmen, you have to turn the clock back to the 2011 season. Hobart defeated St. John Fisher 56-20 on Sept. 24 and St. Thomas topped the Cardinals 45-10 in the NCAA quarterfinals.

The game will be broadcast live by WEOS-FM (89.7/90.3 in Geneva). Fans can also follow the action online with streaming video and live stats.

Women use Twitter to expose video game industry sexism

20 hrs.

If you want a look at what it's like to be a woman working in the video game industry, then take a look at?the #1ReasonWhy hashtag that's been?trending on Twitter this week.

Hundreds of female game?developers, designers, publicists, journalists and other professionals are in the midst of?detailing the sexism they've experienced?in the workplace, encountered?while playing video?games?and found in the gaming community at large.

After Luke Crane,?Games Project Specialist?at Kickstarter,?tweeted the question?"Why are there so few lady game creators?"?the #1ReasonWhy hashtag became the launching point for not only answering that question, but for outlining exactly why?women don't feel comfortable or welcome?in the video game industry in the year 2012.

And this is the ugly truth as laid out by?those who do work in the industry:

"#1reasonwhy because when I tell people I'm a designer, I without fail get 'Really? You don't look like you play games. Guys must love you,'?" tweeted game designer?Alexis De Girolami.?

"#1reasonwhy b/c when my desk was nr the door, most clients thought I was the receptionist. This didn't happen to male dev after desk swap," writes developer?Helen Smailes. ?

"Because?I got blank stares when I asked why a female soldier in a game I worked on looked like a porn star," tweeted designer?Caryn Vainio.

Stephanie Harvey, a?game designer at Ubisoft and professional "Counter Strike" player,?tweeted?"Here is what I get everyday," as she shared?a link to a collection of screenshots she's captured revealing the insults (most of them unprintable)?leveled?at her when she's gaming.

Meanwhile,?Tara J. Brannigan, community marketing manager for PopCap Games, tweeted that she?has "been groped by strangers at least once at nearly every major (game)?conference." And she's not alone. Wrote?Filamena Young,?"Because conventions, where designers are celebrated, are unsafe places for me. Really. I've been groped."?

And that's just the beginning. The hashtag has spawned an outpouring of tweets about unequal pay (which?Lindsay Morgan Lockhart, "Halo 4's"?narrative designer, calls?"staggering")?uncomfortable working environments and an industry where women gamers are little more than an afterthought.

As a lifelong gamer and a?game journalist for more than a decade, I can say that I have learned to expect that vicious, sexist comments will be?hurled my way should?I dare write about the preposterous outfits?female game characters are put in. I've learned that using a female avatar or female-sounding gamertag in an online game means dealing with?unwelcome and unwanted advances. And I've grown used to trolls who question whether I really play hardcore games or who deride me for writing about casual "women's" games. (Apparently I'm not capable of the former and am not a "real gamer" if I enjoy the latter).

Clearly,?this is not about one reason why ... this is about hundreds, even thousands of reasons why.

Of course, the Twitter?uprising hasn't been without its detractors and trolls???these are the men?who basically prove the point that the #1reasonwhy hashtag is so elegantly making.

"I look at #1ReasonWhy and I laugh at all the feminists who think they matter. If you were good in your field, you wouldn't be misrepresented," tweeted Dillon Paradis.

But as upsetting?and maddening as it is combing through these experiences and the backlash, one thing is clear: ?This outpouring is just the latest sign that women (and men)?are fed up with the game?business as usual?and?have no intention of quietly putting up with the sexism any longer.

Not only has the website Fat, Ugly or Slutty been outing the online gaming ugliness with humorous flair,?but at the Penny Arcade Expo this summer, the video game?convention?saw a half dozen?panel discussions addressing and looking for?solutions to the harassment and sexism?that not only women gamers, but gay and transgender gamers, face.

Check out this video from the "Harassment and Bullying in Online Games: Technical Solutions" panel for a fascinating look at the problem and some of the proposed solutions.

Meanwhile, women game industry pros are?seizing?this moment,?harnessing the?#1reasonwhy?fervor and turning the ugliness they've revealed into a catalyst for change.

"Tomb Raider" and "Mirror's Edge"?writer?Rhianna Pratchett, started the hashtag?#1reasontobe, highlighting reasons women should work in the game industry.??"#1reasontobe?Because I get to explore my creativity in a rapidly evolving medium, full of unique, exciting challenges," she tweeted.

And even more importantly, women game professionals are using the?movement to start a mentoring program. "Speak up if you're willing to be a mentor to women looking to get into the industry!" tweeted?Ann Lemay, a writer for?BioWare, promoting the new?#1reasonmentors?hashtag.

And many women and men in the industry???from game companies big and small???have responded to the call for mentors, offering their time and advice to women who dare and dream to join this troubled industry. (You can find a list of the mentoring resources compiled?here.)

Artist and animator?Emily Compton, perhaps summed it up best,?"If?#1reasonwhy?made us mad about our industry today,?#1reasonmentors?makes us hopeful and glad. Onward and upward."

Winda Benedetti?writes?about video?games for NBC?News. You can follow her tweets about games and other things?on Twitter?here?@WindaBenedetti?and you can?follow her?on?Google+.?Meanwhile, be sure to check?out the?IN-GAME?FACEBOOK PAGE?to discuss the day's?gaming news and reviews.

Adolescence and Physical Affection with Parents | Psychology Today

Separating from childhood to begin the journey of adolescence (around ages 9 ? 13), young people reject many childish ways ? interests and likes -- in order to act more grown up. In the process, they may elect to give up the expressing and the accepting of physical affection with parents (sometimes just the expressing, sometimes just the accepting, sometimes both) in order to show that they no longer want to be defined and treated as a child.

In doing so, adolescents can create a loss that they never quite get over ? the letting go of a powerful non-verbal intimacy with parents.

What parents may encounter at this juncture is a more standoffish and physically unresponsive son or daughter who shies away from the old contact because now it feels inappropriate, even embarrassing, diminishing the older status that they seek. Also, after puberty, when the need for physical privacy is increased, the teenager often wants parental touch to be more circumspect so it is not, however unintended, experienced as sexually obstrusive. An affectionate parent can pat, physically play with, and wrestle with a child in ways that are simply off limits with an adolescent.??

Sometimes you can tell how much they miss the old parental touch and hug and kiss when they get angry seeing a parent cuddle a much younger child. ?Why don?t you stop hugging on her?? Or, ?You?re going to spoil him!? And a little later the teenager engages in some age inappropriate teasing of the much younger sibling. Why? The answer is, because it?s painful to witness what he or she has forsaken, but is still?missing. Growing up requires giving up, and ceasing physical affection with parents can create a hard loss.

It helps ease and lessen the loss when parents can do two things ? continue to offer a lesser form of physical affection, and provide expression of caring through words when acts of physical affection are disallowed. Patting your teenager on the back, giving them a side hug, can often get through the painful wall of refusal that is keeping the teenager from the primal parental touch that they still miss. Remember, if you can keep some level of physical contact in place, then as the teenager grows older, and becomes more confident in being older, the acceptance, expression, and reciprocation of physical affection can open up again.

Verbal contact that conveys caring is more important the less welcoming of physical contact the adolescent becomes. Using words to convey sensitivity, empathy, support, interest, attention, approval, and appreciation can all communicate the emotional warmth that physical affection so efficiently conveys. And never underestimate the power of a friendly smile to warm a beleaguered teenager?s heavy heart, as well as laughing with each other and making time to have fun together.

Adolescent boys are particularly susceptible to giving up physical affection from parents because not only does that demonstration of caring feel childish, it also feels unmanly, at least according to the notion that to be a man means being proof against the childish need for parental touch. In response, parents usually back off to respect the more physically aloof definition he is after.

Then, what I sometimes see happen in high school age young men going through a romantic break-up is a degree of devastation greater than for the young woman involved. These young men have been so needy for emotional intimacy and so body-hungry for caring touch, that to have them both intensely given and then torn away can feel overwhelming.

By contrast, many young women have been cultivating same sex-friendships over the years in which emotional sharing and physical affection have been a natural part of the relationship. Maybe this is why young men often fall harder into first love than young women, and must contend with such a powerful loss when a romance is ended.

Fortunately, there are many cases of teenagers, including young men, who keep the door to physical affection with parents open all through their growing up. They are mature or wise enough to understand how forsaking this primal connection is not some adolescent obligation. They do not treat it as a necessary loss. For most others, however, the degree of giving and receiving a loving touch, or hug, or kiss with parents is intermittently permitted depending on mood and circumstance, perhaps accepting and giving it more on close family occasions, for example, and resisting it when in front of friends.

So physical affection from parents with their adolescent can be a hit or miss proposition. And when it is a miss, and the parental overture is turned away, it?s important that parents don?t take that as a personal rejection. It?s better, when refused to just assume the time or mood or circumstance isn?t right, take a rain check, and try again another time when, weather permitting, conditions will be more favorable.

In the meantime, never forget to use that old verbal substitute for physical affection that never goes out of style and that is almost as primal as a hug or kiss in its way -- those three little words that you can never tell your teenager too often: ?I love you.?

Realty Times - Real Estate Outlook: Ever-changing Housing Market

The dynamic and ever-changing housing market has experienced a shift in demographic over the last few years. First, as the housing market felt the shock of the bubble burst, all-cash buyers entered the scene and first-time buyers held back, waiting for the market to hit bottom.

Next, first-time buyers rush to take advantage of the home buyer tax credit in April 2010.

In a recent session at the 2012 Realtors Conference and Expo, "Changing Dynamics of Recent Home Buyers and Sellers," we heard from the experts on what changes they see happening across the nation.

"We've seen a tremendous increase in cash buyers since the housing downturn that we haven't seen before in history," said Lawrence Yun, chief economist of the National Association of Realtors?. Yun said a decade ago, all-cash home purchases were less than 10 percent of the market but have increased steadily since 2008, to as much as 30 percent of sales.

Yun said the increase in more buyers paying cash for real estate reflected tight lending conditions and an increase in investor sales, which account for the bulk of?cash?sales. Increases in the number of international buyers, who often have financing difficulties when purchasing a home in the U.S., are also adding to the rise in cash sales.

NAR research shows that 62 percent of international purchases were all cash; the percentage has continually increased since 2007. ?

In recent index reports from the NAR, we've seen a subtle decrease in the number of all-cash purchasers and a resurgence again of first-time buyers.

All of these factors are impacting builder confidence, rated by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) according to builders' feelings on sales now and future sales.

The most recent Housing Market Index (HMI) release indicates that builder confidence in the 55+ housing market for single-family homes is on a significant rise.

The NAHB reports that "the index more than tripled year over year from a level of 12 to 36, which is the highest third-quarter reading since the inception of the index in 2008."

"Many builders and developers in the 55+ housing segment are reporting an increase in demand from consumers," said NAHB 50+ Housing Council Chairman W. Don Whyte. "We are seeing improvement in certain parts of the country where people are moving off the fence and either purchasing a home or renting an apartment that is designed to more specifically suit their lifestyle."

While components of the 55+ single-family HMI are still below 50 on the scale (the point of balance in the market,) they are twice the levels seen a year ago.

"Like other segments of the housing industry, the market for 55+ housing is continuing on a steady upward path, driven by improving conditions in additional markets around some parts of the country" said NAHB Chief Economist David Crowe.

He continued that, "While we expect the upward trend to continue as the recovery broadens, the speed of the recovery is being constrained by factors such as tight mortgage credit, making it difficult for potential 55+ customers to sell their current homes, and shortages of inputs to construction such as buildable lots that are beginning to emerge in some market areas."

Wikileaks GI to argue his detention merits release

FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) ? An Army private charged in the biggest security breach in U.S. history is trying to avoid trial by claiming he was already punished enough when he was locked up alone in a small cell and forced to sleep naked for several nights.

Pfc. Bradley Manning was expected to testify about his treatment during a pretrial hearing set to begin Tuesday and run through Sunday in a military court at Fort Meade, outside Baltimore. Military officers were expected to testify first, so Manning may not be called to testify until later this week.

Manning's lawyers contend he was illegally punished by being locked up alone in a small cell for nearly nine months at the Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Va., and having to sleep naked for several nights.

Military judges can dismiss all charges if pretrial punishment is particularly egregious, but that rarely happens. The usual remedy is credit at sentencing for time served, said Lisa M. Windsor, a retired Army colonel and former Army judge advocate now in private practice in Washington.

In a 1956 case, U.S. v. Bayhand, a military appeals court ordered all charges dismissed against a soldier who had been forced during his pretrial confinement to do hard labor alongside a sentenced prisoner. The court ruled that the soldier had been given an illegal order.

Since then, there have been few, if any, cases in which pretrial punishment has led to dismissal of all charges. Lt. Col. Eric Carpenter, chairman of the criminal law department at the judge advocates school in Charlottesville, Va., said he couldn't find one but he couldn't say for sure that the remedy hasn't been granted.

Manning has also offered to take responsibility for the leak by pleading guilty to reduced charges. The military judge hasn't yet ruled on the offer and prosecutors have not said whether they would still pursue the charges against him.

He was kept at the Marine Corps brig from July 2010 to April 2011. The military contends the treatment at Quantico was proper, given Manning's classification as a maximum-security detainee who posed a risk of injury to himself or others. He was later moved to Fort Leavenworth, Kan., where he was re-evaluated and given a medium-security classification.

A United Nations investigator called the conditions of Manning's time at Quantico cruel, inhuman and degrading, but stopped short of calling it torture.

Outside Fort Meade, about two dozen people gathered in the rain and under umbrellas to show support for Manning. Some held a banner that said, "Support Bradley Manning."

The 24-year-old native of Crescent, Okla., faces possible life imprisonment if convicted of aiding the enemy, the most serious of the 22 charges.

He is accused of sending hundreds of thousands of classified Iraq and Afghanistan war logs and more than 250,000 diplomatic cables to the secret-spilling website WikiLeaks while he was working as an intelligence analyst in Baghdad in 2009 and 2010.

Five killed in attack on Pakistan Shi'ite gathering, 90 hurt

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan (Reuters) - A bomb killed at least five people and wounded 90 near a Shi'ite procession in Pakistan on Sunday, police said, as the government struggled to contain sectarian Sunni militants who have been stepping up attacks on the minority sect.

Sunni hardliners threatened to carry out major attacks this weekend, an important one in the Shi'ite religious calendar, prompting authorities to halt cellphone coverage in several areas to prevent bombings triggered by remote control.

Authorities have also restricted motorcycle travel, hoping to deprive suicide bombers of one mode of transportation.

Television footage showed the wounded being carried away in the northwestern city of Dera Ismail Khan, where a bomb targeting Shi'ites killed at least seven people, including four children, on Saturday.

Pakistan's Taliban movement, which is focused on trying to topple the U.S.-backed government but is also allied with Sunni sectarian groups, claimed responsibility for both attacks.

"For Interior Minister of Pakistan Rehman Malik, who blocked mobile phones across the country and banned motorbikes, you can't stop our activities against the Shi'ite community and security forces," Taliban spokesman Ehsanullah Ehasan said by telephone from an undisclosed location.

"We will keep continuing our activities and this is a failure of security forces, police and army that we have made successful attacks in Dera Ismail Khan."

Past attacks during the religious event have killed large numbers of Shi'ites.

Sunday's bomb, planted in a shop beside a street market, also wounded five security officials, said senior police official Malik Mushtaq.

Doctors at a hospital in Dera Ismail Khan said five people were killed and 90 wounded. "There is a lack of ambulances and not enough hospital beds," said one. "People brought many of the injured to the hospital on rickshaws."

Hardline sectarian Sunni groups, which are becoming increasingly dangerous, have threatened more attacks as the Shi'ite mourning month of Muharram comes to a climax on Sunday.

Security officials say organizations such as Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) are stepping up attacks on Shi'ites, who they regard as non-believers, in a bid to destabilize nuclear-armed, U.S. ally Pakistan and establish a Sunni theocracy.

Al Qaeda, which is close to LeJ, pushed Iraq to the brink of a sectarian civil war several years ago with large-scale suicide bombings of Shi'ites.

More than 300 Shi'ites have been killed in Pakistan so far this year in sectarian conflict, according to human rights groups. The campaign is gathering pace in rural as well as urban areas such as Karachi, Pakistan's biggest city.

Shi'ites account for up to 20 percent of this nation of 180 million.

The growing death toll has discouraged some Shi'ites from taking part in processions this year during one of their most sacred rituals, when people flagellate themselves with chains and other items to commemorate the martyrdom of the grandson of Islam's prophet, who was killed during the battle of Karbala.

"If I were to compare with last year, the fear has definitely increased," said Sadia Fatema, 28. "Just last night me and my mother were asking my father and brother if they really had to go to the procession. We are worried."

Others say the pressure has made Shi'ites stand up to Sunni hardliners.

"There is fear, but there is also anger and defiance among Shi'ites," said one, who asked not to be named.

"Shi'ites never felt like a minority in Pakistan but now they are slowly being turned into a real minority. And Shi'ites will not let this happen."

Washington, a critical source of financial aid for cash-strapped Pakistan, has been pressuring the South Asian nation to crack down on militants based in tribal areas who cross the border to attack American-led forces in Afghanistan.

Pakistan, meanwhile, faces major domestic security challenges from a wide range of groups, including the Taliban, who capitalize on issues such as unemployment, official corruption and poverty to boost recruitment.

A series of crackdowns has failed to break the back of militant groups based along the border with Afghanistan.

Intrade boots US customers after federal charges

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Intrade, the online prediction market that gained popularity as an informal oddsmaker for the presidential election, shut itself to U.S. customers Monday after regulators charged it with illegally facilitating bets on future economic data, the price of gold and even acts of war.

Hours after the Commodity Futures Trading Commission filed a complaint in federal court, Intrade posted in its user forum and on its news page that it could no longer allow U.S. residents to trade "due to legal and regulatory pressures."

U.S. residents must begin closing their accounts and withdrawing their funds immediately, the website said. It said customers must resolve open predictions by Dec. 23 or the site would assign them "fair market value" and close them.

The CFTC's civil complaint charged that Intrade and its operator solicited customers to trade investment contracts that technically are options. Options must be traded on approved, regulated exchanges.

"Today's action should make it clear that we will intervene in the 'prediction' markets, wherever they may be based, when their U.S. activities violate" laws and rules enforced by the agency, CFTC enforcement director David Meister said in a statement.

By requiring that options be traded on approved exchanges, Meister said, regulators can "police market activity and protect market integrity."

Intrade did not respond to an emailed request for comment.

It was unclear whether regulators believe that all trades on Intrade by U.S. investors are illegal. The CFTC said it would not comment further because the matter was in litigation.

Intrade is known for facilitating bets on award shows, weather and other high-profile events. The prices at which customers are willing to make those bets are cited as informal odds. TEN also used to allow betting on sports through other sites that it operated.

For example, on Monday the site gave "Argo" a 28.5 percent chance of winning the Oscar for best picture and assigned a 19 percent chance that the United States or Israel would launch an airstrike against Iran by June 30.

The CFTC oversees markets for futures and options, investments that allow people to bet on the future prices of commodities like grain and oil. Those contracts help farms, airlines and other businesses to protect themselves against unexpected price swings.

In the complaint, the CFTC alleged that Intrade, based in Ireland, had illegally solicited everyday U.S. investors to use the website between September 2007 and June 25 of this year.

Intrade and its operator, Trade Exchange Network Ltd., falsely claimed in annual reports that the contracts were not being sold to ordinary U.S. customers, the CFTC said. Regulators want the companies to pay fines and return profits that were obtained illegally. They want the site and its operators barred from any future activities related to options trading.

Intrade users reported on Twitter that the site already blocks them from trading contracts related to the prices of oil and gold.

One of them, Joe Schilling, posted an image of an email he said was sent by Intrade in 2009, stating that crude oil and gold contracts were unavailable to U.S. users "due to a regulatory request" from the CFTC.

TEN settled similar charges of soliciting U.S. investors in 2005. In an order filed with that settlement, the CFTC said that U.S. customers accounted for up to 40 percent of Intrade's total customer base. TEN paid $150,000 and agreed to halt further violations.

Under the settlement, TEN agreed to use pop-up windows to tell U.S. customers which bets were not available to them. It said it would cooperate in any future investigations.

Monday's complaint includes charges that TEN violated that earlier settlement. The company used Intrade to offer illegal options including on the future prices of gold, changes in the unemployment rate and a measure of U.S. economic output, the complaint said. It said TEN failed to provide the pop-up notices mandated in the 2005 order.

LONDON???Could computers become cleverer than humans and take over the world? Or is that just the stuff of science fiction?

Philosophers and scientists at Britain's Cambridge University think the question deserves serious study. A proposed Center for the Study of Existential Risk will bring together experts to consider the ways in which super intelligent technology, including artificial intelligence, could "threaten our own existence," the institution said Sunday.

"In the case of artificial intelligence, it seems a reasonable prediction that some time in this or the next century intelligence will escape from the constraints of biology," Cambridge philosophy professor Huw Price said.

When that happens, "we're no longer the smartest things around," he said, and will risk being at the mercy of "machines that are not malicious, but machines whose interests don't include us."

Fears that machines could overtake humans have long been the subject of science fiction ? the computer HAL in the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey," for example, is one of film's best-known computer threats.

Price acknowledged that many people believe his concerns are far-fetched, but insisted the potential risks are too serious to brush away.

"It tends to be regarded as a flakey concern, but given that we don't know how serious the risks are, that we don't know the time scale, dismissing the concerns is dangerous. What we're trying to do is to push it forward in the respectable scientific community," he said.

While Price said the exact nature of the risks is difficult to predict, he said that advanced technology could be a threat when computers start to direct resources towards their own goals, at the expense of human concerns like environmental sustainability.

He compared the risk to the way humans have threatened the survival of other animals by spreading across the planet and using up natural resources that other animals depend upon.

Price is co-founding the project together with Cambridge professor of cosmology and astrophysics Martin Rees and Jann Tallinn, one of the founders of the internet phone service Skype.

The university said Sunday the center's launch is planned next year.?

Why greenhouse gases hit record high in 2011

Carbon dioxide, the primary greenhouse gas emitted by human activities, reached 390.9 parts per million last year, or 40 percent above the pre-industrial level, the World Meteorological Organization said. It cited fossil fuel as the primary source.

By Staff,?Reuters / November 20, 2012

This month, California?s largest greenhouse gas emitters began buying permits in a landmark ?cap-and-trade? system meant to control emissions of heat-trapping gases and spur investment in clean technologies. At left, an oil refinery o in Bakersfield, Calif.

Atmospheric volumes of greenhouse gases blamed for climate change hit a new record in 2011, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said in its annual Greenhouse Gas Bulletin on Tuesday.

The volume of carbon dioxide, the primary greenhouse gas emitted by human activities, grew at a similar rate to the previous decade and reached 390.9 parts per million (ppm), 40 percent above the pre-industrial level, the survey said.

It has increased by an average of 2 ppm for the past 10 years.

Fossil fuels are the primary source of about 375 billion tonnes of carbon that has been released into the atmosphere since the industrial era began in 1750, the WMO said.

WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud said the billions of tonnes of extra carbon dioxide would stay in the atmosphere for centuries, causing the planet to warm further.

"We have already seen that the oceans are becoming more acidic as a result of the carbon dioxide uptake, with potential repercussions for the underwater food chain and coral reefs," he said in a statement.

Levels of methane, another long-lived greenhouse gas, have risen steadily for the past three years after levelling off for about seven years. The reasons for that evening out are unclear.

Growth in volumes of a third gas, nitrous oxide, quickened in 2011. It has a long-term climate impact that is 298 times greater than carbon dioxide.

The WMO, the United Nations' weather agency, said the three gases, which are closely linked to human activities such as fossil fuel use, deforestation and intensive agriculture, had increased the warming effect on the climate by 30 percent between 1990 and 2011.

The prevalence of several less abundant greenhouse gases was also growing fast, it said.

Sulphur hexafluoride, used as an electrical insulator in power distribution equipment, had doubled in volume since the mid-1990s, while hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) were growing at a rapid rate from a low base.

But chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and most halons were decreasing, it said.

South Africa spent $3 billion on 2010 World Cup

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? South Africa spent more than $3 billion on the 2010 World Cup, and in return gained an "intangible legacy" from the first world soccer showpiece in Africa, the country's government said Friday in its final report on the tournament.

In the "2010 FIFA World Cup Country Report," released nearly 2? years after the event, South Africa's government said it spent $1.1 billion on building and upgrading stadiums alone.

Transport was the biggest cost, with $1.3 billion dedicated to improving road, rail and air links and a further $392 million on the country's main ports of entry.

In the absence of any final definitive figures on how much South Africa earned in total from being the host, the report said the World Cup had left an intangible legacy of pride and unity among South Africans and had changed the country's image as undeveloped, crime-ridden and dangerous in the eyes of the rest of the world.

"To top it all, we didn't have lions roaming the streets and we did have ATMs," the report, published by the ministry of sport, added light-heartedly.

It did predict a $6 billion boost to South Africa's economy as a result of the monthlong World Cup, according to a study by risk analysis and finance company Grant Thornton, but that was a mid to long-term projection.

FIFA reported it made a $631 million profit from the 2007-10 World Cup cycle and earned income of $3.65 billion from 2010 World Cup contracts. FIFA said it spent $1.298 billion on the World Cup in South Africa and also gave $100 million to the World Cup Legacy Trust, a fund that supports grassroots soccer projects.

"The World Cup in South Africa was a huge, huge financial success for Africa, for South Africa and for FIFA," FIFA president Sepp Blatter said in 2011 as the world body published its own financial report.

While critics have said that such a huge outlay on a 30-day sports event was impractical for South Africa ? and the final word on whether it was an economic success was still pending ? the government could argue that it had already earned over $400 million from the more than 300,000 tourists that visited for the World Cup.

The upgrade to much of South Africa's transport infrastructure was a long-term investment, the government said.

The expensive World Cup stadiums are still underused, however, and some are losing money. The Cape Town Stadium ? reportedly the most expensive of the seven new venues at $600 million ? is in the most trouble.

"This report will also serve as a reference guide and benchmark for planning other major sporting events," South Africa's government said in a statement to introduce the publication, which featured the 2010 World Cup logo and was embossed with shiny gold letters.

South Africa has said it is considering a bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Obamas' Thanksgiving Menu a Tour de Pie

As for many Americans, Thanksgiving is a time of tradition at the White House. But the Obama family has taken it a little more literally, eating basically the same thing each year since 2009.

An organic, brine-soaked roast turkey and honey-baked ham make the main courses. There are two kinds of stuffing: cornbread and oyster. Macaroni and cheese, greens, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes and green-bean casserole round out the sides.

The Obamas don't skimp on dessert. Six pies make a roulette of sweets for diners. Apple, cherry, banana cream, sweet potato and huckleberry are joined by what is reportedly the president's favorite: pumpkin.

PHOTOS: Thanksgiving Traditions at the White House

Foodies who want to replicate the feast on their own are in luck. The White House's top chef, Cristeta Comerford, shared some of the recipes in an interview with the Washington Post. Having cooked for each president since Clinton, the former "Iron Chef America" guest star warns would-be cooks to have plenty of free time; the turkey alone requires 12 hours of marinating.

The Obamas' dinner guests consist of a closely guarded list of family and friends, some going back to their days in Chicago.

ABC News' Serena Marshall contributed to this report.

Fresh Ideas And Tips For Home Improvement Projects | FBF Article ...

Some people hear the words home improvement and automatically think disaster, but this doesn?t necessarily have to be the case. You are going to hit snags in most home improvement projects, so if you are attempting to tackle the plumbing, you might want to leave that to the professionals, to avoid a major home improvement blunder. A good rule of thumb is if your not sure ask.

If your home improvement project involves moving appliances or other furniture in your house, make sure to put something down to protect your floors. Particularly if you have hardwood flooring, taking out large items can make a big mess and scratch up your flooring. Taking a few minutes to protect your floors can save you a lot of money in the long run.

Maybe the house or apartment you?re living in is great, but the view to the outside is not. If you have any offending sights that you wish to conceal, consider putting some plants or flowers on your window sill or in a window box. If you would like to take drastic measures in concealing your offending view, plant some shrubs or large trees in front of your window. This can ensure that you have a nicer view.

If your living room is dark even though you have a lot of windows, there are ways to ensure that light will get through. Installing skylights is a great way to save on energy bills because it cuts down on the use of lamps, and it will ensure that natural lighting comes through. Choosing to paint your living room warm and inviting colors such as orange, yellow, or light brown can create a feeling of warmth and light. Make sure to decorate with light wood colored furniture instead of dark and heavy oaks.

Rearranging your furniture can be fun, but oftentimes you need visual aides to determine where to put everything. A great way to arrange furniture with visual aiding is by taking a piece of graph paper and cutting out square shapes in a scaled format to represent your different pieces of furniture. You can easily toss your graph paper pieces around and decide how everything can fit together. It definitely saves you the trouble of pushing your furniture around first.

Thinking green about home improvements not only means being environmentally friendly, but it also means taking action on your lawn. If the lawn looks horrendous with bare spots and weeds, seed and fertilize it. If it is damaged beyond repair get a new sod laid to give your home a great new look.
